Spíti project: K·LINE windows and a Galandage system opening the living room onto the terrace

As part of this home renovation in Sant Pere de Ribes, we installed K·LINE aluminium windows and used a Galandage sliding system for the main access to the terrace. When opened, the sliding panels disappear into the wall, leaving almost the entire opening clear.

The project

A renovation where natural light and the connection to the terrace really mattered

Spíti is a home where every detail has been carefully considered. When choosing the new windows, we wanted to follow the same approach: slim frames, plenty of glass and practical solutions that work well every day.

Not every opening called for the same solution. Throughout the property we combined K·LINE casement and sliding windows, choosing each system according to the available space and how each room is used.

One area needed particular attention: the opening from the living room onto the terrace. With a conventional sliding door, part of the opening would always remain occupied, even when fully open.

That is why we chose a K·LINE Galandage system. The sliding panels move sideways into the wall cavity, creating a much wider connection between indoors and outdoors.

The window was never meant to be the main feature. Its job was to let the light, the terrace and the space itself take centre stage.
What we wanted to achieve

Windows considered as part of the renovation

Rather than using the same type of window throughout the property, we looked at which solution made the most sense for each space.

01

More natural light

Make the most of each opening while reducing the visual presence of the aluminium frames.

02

Open the living room onto the terrace

Leave as much of the opening clear as possible whenever the sliding door is open.

03

Comfort in every room

Combine different opening systems according to the available space and how each window will be used.

04

A consistent appearance

Keep the same visual language throughout the home even though the windows use different opening systems.

The living-room opening disappears into the wall

The Galandage system was one of the elements that needed careful planning from the early stages of the renovation.

Unlike a conventional sliding door, the panels do not remain overlapping in front of the opening. Instead, they slide sideways and disappear into the wall.

The difference becomes particularly clear when the door is open. The living room and terrace feel much more connected, while almost the full width of the opening remains available to walk through.

  • The sliding panels are hidden inside the wall when open.
  • Almost the entire opening is left clear.
  • No opening space is taken up inside the living room or on the terrace.
  • The wall needs to be prepared for the system from the beginning of the renovation.

During the renovation

The sliding-door structure before it becomes part of the wall

These photographs show the Galandage sliding-door framework before the wall is finished. The structure provides the space the sliding panels need to move sideways and disappear from view when the door is opened.

Once the system has been installed and we have checked that everything operates correctly, the structure is covered with plasterboard. This allows the whole assembly to become part of the wall so that, once the renovation is complete, it is barely visible.

What appears here as an exposed structure eventually becomes part of the finished room.

The result

When it is open, the opening itself takes centre stage

Once the renovation is complete, the system is fully integrated into the property. Closed, it works as the living room's sliding patio door; open, the panels disappear into the wall and create a much stronger connection between the terrace and the interior.

Casement and sliding windows chosen for each space

The Galandage system is the most eye-catching part of the project, but using the same type of window throughout the house would not have made practical sense.

In the rest of the property, we combined K·LINE aluminium casement and sliding windows according to the size of each opening, the surrounding space and how each room is used.

A casement window works well where a more complete closing system is useful, while a sliding window is a better choice where we want to avoid a sash opening into the room.

Although the opening systems differ, the windows maintain a consistent appearance throughout the property.

A decision for every opening

Not every window needs to solve the same problem

During a full renovation, it can be tempting to choose one window and repeat it throughout the house. We prefer to look at every opening individually.

A bedroom, a kitchen and an opening onto a terrace all have very different requirements. Their dimensions vary too, as does the amount of space available around each window.

At Spíti, this led us to use several different K·LINE systems while keeping a consistent overall appearance.

The Galandage system solves the living-room opening. Elsewhere in the property, simpler solutions are often exactly what works best.
