Vioklimatikós project: a bioclimatic pergola designed to make more of the terrace
For this project, we installed an aluminium bioclimatic pergola with motorised adjustable louvres, allowing the amount of direct sunlight and shade to be controlled while providing greater protection when the roof is closed.
The aim was to make the roof adaptable throughout the day: open it when more light is wanted, angle the louvres to provide shade, or close them when a more sheltered area is needed.
Creating shade without permanently closing the terrace off from the sky
A fixed roof provides shade, but it also keeps the terrace covered when that protection is not needed.
At Vioklimatikós, we wanted something more flexible. That is why we used a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable louvres, allowing the roof to respond to the time of day and the conditions outside.
The louvres can be opened to let in more light, angled to provide shade while maintaining airflow, or closed when a more sheltered space is needed.
This means the pergola does more than simply cover the terrace. It adapts to the way the outdoor space is being used at any given time.
A terrace that adapts more easily throughout the day
The pergola allows us to control sunlight and protection without permanently covering the terrace.

A roof that can be opened, angled or closed
The main difference with a bioclimatic pergola is the way its roof works.
Instead of a fixed roof, it is made up of motorised adjustable aluminium louvres. Their position can be changed according to the sun, the temperature and the way the terrace is being used.
With the louvres open, more daylight enters the space. By angling them, we create shade while still allowing air to circulate through the roof.
When closed, the roof provides greater protection below and rainwater is channelled through the pergola structure.

Adjusting the louvres changes the conditions below without adding or removing anything from the terrace. Everything is controlled through the roof itself.
A more sheltered outdoor area without permanently enclosing the terrace
Once installed, the pergola creates a more protected area within the terrace while still allowing the roof to be opened whenever more daylight and a stronger sense of being outdoors are wanted.
That ability to adapt throughout the day was exactly what this project needed.

A terrace does not need the same protection all year round
During summer, reducing direct sunlight for much of the day can make the terrace far more comfortable.
At other times of the year, opening the louvres allows much more natural light into the space.
A bioclimatic pergola makes that change possible without adding awnings, panels or other elements above the roof.
The same structure can work in very different ways simply by changing the position of the louvres.
